THE NEED IS SEVERE.

Numerous blood drives have been canceled, leading to severe blood shortages at hospitals. The situation is likely to get worse before it gets better. Donating blood is a very tangible action you can take right now to help others in a time of social distancing.

*Note: at age 16 you can give with signed parent consent. At age 17 you can give without consent. Minors should still have parental permission before giving.

IS IT SAFE TO GIVE?

You may be concerned about the possibility of contracting COVID-19 while donating blood. It's important to know that blood donation is an incredibly safe process, and blood drives are run by highly-trained and extremely competent professionals.

what makes it safe?

  • Pre-donation temperature checks will be taken on prospective donors prior to sign-in to exclude any individuals running a fever. This is in addition to all the routine health and vitals checks.

  • There will be several additional disinfection steps taken to treat surfaces, equipment, and electronics between each donor.

  • Social distancing steps will be taken in donor waiting areas, locations for health histories, the post-donation canteen, and donor beds.

  • Increased signage will be in place, including information sheets on COVID-19.

  • All staff and other workers will have their temperatures taken before they are allowed to interact with donors.

  • Enhanced hand washing and use of hand-sanitizer will be mandated for staff.
